Please, please, please keep in mind that this is my opinion. I am not bashing an American institution, just feeling a little silly about it. I know there are thousands, tens of thousands of fans out there and I respect your enjoyment of this iconic pastime.
When I was a kid, my dad had these old 45 rpm recordings of Andy Griffith’s comedy routines. He had a series of “What it Was, Was (fill in the blank)”. There was one on ballet, golf, and others that I can’t recall the subject matter. The ballet one was my favorite. “What it Was, Was Swan Lake,” hysterical. In these routines, he commented on things his country boy head couldn’t quite get wrapped around. That backwoods act and the way he put things entertained my sister and I on rainy afternoons.
My “What it Was,” is NASCAR. I’ve tried to enjoy it. I just can’t get into the left turn, left turn, left turn, (to quote Jeff Dunham) to save my life. It’s kind of like watching a dog chase its tail. Entertaining for a bit, but by lap 50 (maybe before), I’m done. Anyway, this notion started when I was listening to the buzz and whine of engines emanating from the TV in another room of the house (yes, it was loud) the other day. Even the sound is repetitious. I have to say that the cars are colorful, it has that going for it.
Just had to get my “What it Was” off my chest, and again, it’s my opinion. All of you who enjoy NASCAR and other forms of vehicle racing–right on! You can take shots at my favorite form of racing, which is . . .
